Lembah Baliem Festival

23      Save to calendar 2018-08-08 09:00:00 2018-08-10 18:00:00 Asia/Jakarta Lembah Baliem Festival The Baliem Valley Cultural Festival is the artistic and cultural event of the Central Highlands communities with the main show of "Attraction of the Tribal Wars" adapted from the clan and sub-clan traditions of Dani, Lani and Yali. This tradition was originally an effort to maintain the agility and readiness of the war troops to defend their village. At this festival we can see the simulation of war as well as traditional dance and music performances and archery and throwing spears. The festival begins with war-triggering scenarios such as citizen abductions, killing of tribal children or invading newly opened fields.

Dani tribes used to fight to defend their village or to seek revenge for killed members of the tribe. According to anthropologists, tribal wars in the Baliem Valley are more of a display of greatness and luxury of clothing with decorations other than the war to kill enemies, which feature more of competences and enthusiasm other than a desire to kill. The weapon used is a long spear measuring 4.5 meters, bow and arrow. In battle, the wounded immediately brought out the battle field.

The festival is enlivened with Bakar Batu ritual –cooking techniques of meat and vegetables with stones that have been heated by burning it and put it into the soil– theatrical actions, pig racing, traditional game of Sikoko and puradaan as well as culinary typical of Baliem Valley. Held for 3 days every August before the celebration of Indonesian Independence Day, the Baliem Valley Festival is also an exhibition of regional creative economy products such as Sali, skirt from grass or fern fiber worn by women, Noken or woven rope bags, as well as Wamena, coffee that has been known worldwide.
