19      Save to calendar 2018-08-11 10:00:00 2018-08-11 17:00:00 Asia/Jakarta Jatiwangi Cup Jatiwangi Cup is a bodybuilding competition between jebors (clay roof-tile factory), held by the people of Jatiwangi, Majalengka district, West Java. Its workers who, thanks to their daily routine, have a muscular body like bodybuilders, take part in this annual event.

This body contest was first held in 2015 by the initiation of the non-profit organisation Jatiwangi Art Factory. It is one of the efforts of the community to revive the fame of the clay roof-tile industry which is currently critical in terms of raw materials, fuel and labour. The clay roof-tile industry has to face strong competition from other products for roofing such as spandex, asbestos, and concrete roof tile, since the price of clay continues to grow.

Clay roof-tile factories also experience difficulties in finding workers due to the lack of interest from locals to work in such factory. Junior high school graduates prefer to work for garment and shoe factories. The majority of the clay-tile factory workers are nowadays elementary school graduates whose age goes from 30 to 50.

For the people of Jatiwangi, clay roof-tile is not a mere decoration, but rather the pulse of life. In almost all villages in Jatiwangi sub-district, there is a close relationship between locals and the clay roof-tile industry, from the roof and walls that are protected by dark red clay roof-tiles to the chimney of factories’ stoves that stand out amid residential areas. The fame of Jatiwangi clay roof-tile which started back in 1905, is seen among others on the building of Jatiwangi and Kadipaten Sugar Factory that was built during the Dutch colonial period, Bung Karno Sports Arena and Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, as well as 1970s luxury houses in Jakarta and other cities.

Jatiwangi Cup has become an entertainment, a pride, and a strategy to bring up the roof tile industry that is on the brink of a downturn.
