Dieng Culture Festival is a typical annual event of Dieng Plateau featuring various arts and cultures with its core event, shaving off of Dieng’s children’s deardlocks. Children with dreadlocks in Dieng were born with normal hair, but at some point at an early age, their hair grows to be dreadlocks.
According to local belief, these children with dreadlocks are cherry picked by the ancestors as a sign of prosperity level in the Dieng community. The more the existence of children with dreadlocks, Dieng people believe that their well-being will improve.
Shaving off of dreadlocks procession in children is called ruwatan. This hair pruning is only done when the child asks for it, otherwise it will regrow despite having been pruned. The ceremony begins with a procession of children with dreadlocks carried around the village, paraded on traditional Javanese horse-drawn carriages, uardby Manggala Yudha or royal troops and followed by various traditional artistic processions. These special children will then be taken to the Temple of Arjuna at the Dieng Temple complex where the dreadlocks pruning ritual will take place. Furthermore, shaved-off dreadlocks will be brought to the lake and submerged here as a symbol of returning the hair back to the ancestors.
Dieng Culture Festival which always attracts tens of thousands of visitors is also enlivened by performances of music on cloud (held in Dieng plateau), lantern party, documentary film festival, and other various arts and culture events.
