Fond of watching MMA, the professional wrestling event in a rectangular ring? Kediri and Blitar have their own version of the event: the santri (students of Islamic schools) version which is no less exciting, but offers its own excitement. On a wooden sky-roofed stage of 8 x 4 meters built in the middle of a wide field, with the accompaniment of tanjidor music and witnessed by hundreds of villagers.
Pencak Dor as a culture of fighting has developed in the environment of pesantren (Islamic boarding school) Karesidenan Kediri since the colonial era. It was initiated to outsmart quarrels between students. In 1960, Pencak Dor was finally instituted by Gus Ma'sum Jauhari, the caretaker of Pesantren Lirboyo, as an openly held pencak silat fighting contest. It swiftly then became a popular community entertainment with the accompaniment of tanjidor music.
"Opponents atop, comrades under" is the eagerness that underlies their arena. Pencak Dor is not only a fighting event, but also a gathering means. There is no winning nor losing. As long as they are atop, they are opponents. But when they are under, they are friends. Santris who intentionally practice to be the fighters are uniquely not the only ones allowed to take part, everyone is, and even citizens who are watching. This event is often used as a truce to bickers between citizens. Once the fight is over, so is the problem. Once in the ring, seizing victory is no longer the intention. Do not therefore be surprised if every battle gives birth to cheers and laughter.
