Gamelan has become part of everyday life of the Javanese community since over a thousand years ago. Reliefs on rupadhatu panels of Borobudur temple, illustrate that they have become part of the locals’ activities at that time. While the countries from which the tradition of gamelan originates are fading and replaced by new countries, gamelan keeps its existence in the society.
Gamelan has been spreading, not only geographically, but its form has also adapted, its function, and its position in the society. Since centuries ago, it has spread to many regions in the Archipelago even worldwide, forming various gamelan communities in Europe, America, Australia, and Asia. It has been appreciated by different societies and has become a part of everyday life in the diaspora countries.
It has also experienced the spreading to various media such as dance, theater, cinema, visual media, literature, as well as industrial music. In short gamelan is no longer a mere form of musical expression, it has become a form of cultural expression.
Carrying the theme of "Homecoming", 2018 Gamelan International Festival is expected to create a kind of homecoming arena for gamelan groups that have had diaspora in different parts of the world and in various shades of development and function.
Gamelan International Festival is also expected to be the momentum of gathering and cultural pilgrimage that awakens and cares for memories, fosters pride, reconstructs identity and weaves dreams of a harmonious, tolerant, and equal future through aesthetic ways just like a gamelan ensemble.
The event is divided into several locations, including: Fort Vastenburg, Surakarta ISI Campus, Surakarta Kasunanan and and Mangkunegaran Palace, Banjarsari House, Soedjatmoko Hall, Lokananta, and several other strategic points.
