The ship carrying King Siak and his family was chased by the Iranun in the waters of Strait Panjang. The king decided to hide and rest on a river bank. One day, he wanted to bathe his child with a bokor (bowl). As he was in a hurry, the bowl fell into the river and could not be found. Since then, the king named the river and the village in the headwaters of it as River and Bokor Village.
Far from hustle and bustle of the city, not even a car, this village in Meranti, Riau only has boats, bicycles, motorcycles and carts. However, behind its simplicity, Bokor Village holds an international music festival named “Bokor World Music Festival”.
Uniquely, the festival that is annually held carries its visitors, participants and even musical instruments by the locals’ transportation. Plus they are allowed to stay at locals’. Visitors and participants normally walk by the beauty of curved River Bokor to reach the festival venue.
First organised in 2015, the Bokor World Music Festival is a world music performance that also directly introduces the wisdom of the heirs of Malay culture in River Bokor, and other local potentials. In 2019, with the theme "The Voice of Nature in Sounds", the festival is expected to be able to become a world-class music festival that continues to run with all its simplicity and natural beauty.
From Sekupang Port on Batam Island you can board the ferry at 7 am or 11 am to Panjang Strait, then by boarding a wooden boat to Bokor Village. You can contact the organiser who will find you a host.
