At that time, a Hindustan King named Maulana Kari was about to celebrate the engagement of his daughter, Sari Banilai with Bujang Juaro. Then the king had to go sailing with his family. His daughter had sworn prior to her father’s departure that she would become a stone if she broke the promise of engagement.
The ship was unexpectedly carried away by the current and sandwiched between two big hills. Hearing the news, Rajo Darah Putiah who ruled the area then allowed King Mulana’s family to stay providing that they matchmake their children.
Banilai then conceived a child. Until one day, when Banilai wanted to grab her child's toy that fell into the sea, she remembered her oath. She was then dragged and stuck, and gradually froze and became a stone. In one part of Harau Valley, there is a stone in the form of a mother carrying a child that is believed to be the stone of Sari Banilai.
Around 138 km from the city of Padang, with a stretch of valley of granite aged 30-40 million years, the Harau Valley seems to have stored a wealth of natural charm that has been recognised by the Dutch Resident Assistant F. Rinner in 1926. Additionally the area that is often nicknamed as the hidden paradise in the Land of Minang, is also rich in art and culture. Through Pasa Harau Art & Culture Festival, we can get to know more about art, culture, traditional games and Harau cuisine.
