Bakar Tongkang is an annual ritual to commemorate the arrival of Chinese citizens to Bagansiapiapi land by burning tongkang (ships). In the ceremony known as Go Gek Cap Lak in the Hokian language, the burned barge became a symbol of determination of Chinese comunity in Bagansiapiapi to settle and develop themselves in the city also known as Hong Kong van Andalas.
The ritual is preserved by local residents as an effort to commemorate the history of the arrival of their ancestors to Bagansiapiapi. Barong Tongkang Festival begins with the prayer in Ing Hok Kiong temple which is the oldest temple in the Great Pekong area. The hio in their hand the residents undergo ritual prayer, praying and vowing. Furthermore, the event continues with a parade or procession to the kiln and the positioning of the bow lane according to the instructions of Kie Ong Ya or the God of the Sea, the god of salvation who had given instructions to their ancestors who got lost in the sea. After the barge is laid on the burning position and the prayer papers on the hull of a ready-to- burn vessel, the barge with its high mast was then burned to tumble.
The direction of the collapsed barge is believed by the local communities as the direction of the coming of sustenance from the sea. During the rituals, various pagodas in Bagansiapiapi perform a spiritual summoning ceremony. Some locals volunteer to be the medium for the spirit to enter their body.
This Tionghoa traditional event that has been blended with Bagansiapiapi societies attracts the interest of domestic tourists and foreigners who are generally of Chinese descents who have families in Rokanhilir. During the event, local government organizes a bazaar centered at Pujasera Bagansiapi-api.
